How to Play Skyraid.io

Skyraid.io is a multiplayer aerial combat game where you pilot WW2 fighter planes, collect XP, evolve your aircraft, and fight to become the top ace. This guide covers everything you need to dominate the skies. For deeper analysis of individual planes see the aircraft database, and for advanced tactics see the strategy guide.

Getting Started

To start playing, simply enter a pilot name on the main screen and click PLAY. You'll spawn into the game world as a basic Biplane. Your goal is to shoot down other players, destroy ground objectives, and collect XP orbs to evolve into more powerful aircraft. Each round lasts 10 minutes, after which scores are tallied and a new round begins.

Your First Five Minutes: A Walkthrough

Most new players die three or four times before they get a feel for the controls. The fastest way to skip past the frustration phase is to follow a structured opening for your first few matches. Here is exactly what to do:

Seconds 0–10: You spawn as a Biplane somewhere on the map. Look at the minimap in the bottom-right corner and find the nearest ground target (small marker). Point your nose at it and press W to thrust. Hold W; the Biplane is slow and you need every bit of speed to get there before someone else does.

Seconds 10–30: When you reach the ground target, hold left mouse button to fire continuously. The target has 40 HP and the Biplane fires 8 damage per shot every 250 ms, so it dies in about 1.5 seconds of sustained fire. When it explodes, fly into the cloud of XP orbs it drops to collect them. You should now have around 150 XP.

Seconds 30–90: Look at the minimap again. Find another ground target (preferably one not near a colored enemy dot) and repeat. After two or three ground targets you will hit 500 XP and the evolution prompt will appear in the center of your screen.

Seconds 90–100: The evolution screen offers you Fighter, Bomber, or Interceptor. Press 1 for Fighter (the safest choice), 2 for Bomber (the most survivable), or 3 for Interceptor (the fastest). For your first few matches, pick Fighter. You'll instantly transform into a Tier 1 plane with much better stats.

Minutes 2–5: You are now a Tier 1 plane. Your job changes — you can now take fights with other players. Look for solo targets (especially other Biplanes and Tier 1 planes flying alone) and engage them. Use rockets (right mouse button) to finish wounded enemies. Continue destroying ground targets and start engaging the airbases (large structures with auto-turrets). You need 3,000 XP to evolve to Tier 2.

If you die during these first five minutes, do not panic. You respawn as a Biplane with a fresh chance to repeat the loop. Each respawn takes a few seconds, after which you re-enter the same match with the same XP requirements.

Aircraft & Evolution

Skyraid.io features 10 aircraft types organized in an evolution tree across three tiers. As you collect XP from kills, objectives, and orbs, you'll be offered a choice to evolve into a more powerful plane. Each aircraft has unique stats for speed, health, firepower, armor, and rocket capacity.

For full per-aircraft details, history, and matchups see the aircraft database.

TIER 0 Biplane (Starter)

Every pilot begins with the Biplane. It's nimble but fragile with low damage output. Collect 500 XP to evolve to Tier 1. Focus on collecting XP orbs and attacking ground targets rather than fighting evolved planes head-on.

TIER 1 Fighter

A balanced all-rounder with good speed and decent firepower. The Fighter is forgiving for new players and effective at dogfighting. Evolves into the P-51 Mustang or Spitfire at 1500 XP.

TIER 1 Bomber

Slow but heavily armored with high damage output. The Bomber excels at destroying ground objectives and can take a beating in combat. Evolves into the B-17 Fortress or Stuka at 1500 XP.

TIER 1 Interceptor

The fastest Tier 1 aircraft with rapid-fire weapons but lower health. Interceptors dominate in hit-and-run tactics and chasing down fleeing enemies. Evolves into the P-38 Lightning or Zero at 1500 XP.

TIER 2 P-51 Mustang

An iconic American fighter with excellent all-around performance. High speed, solid damage, and good survivability make the Mustang a top-tier dogfighter.

TIER 2 Spitfire

The legendary British fighter known for agility. The Spitfire has the tightest turn rate at Tier 2, making it deadly in close-quarters dogfights where maneuverability matters more than raw speed.

TIER 2 B-17 Fortress

A flying fortress with massive health and heavy weaponry. The B-17 is slow but nearly indestructible, with the highest rocket capacity in the game. Ideal for objective destruction and absorbing damage for your team.

TIER 2 Stuka

The feared German dive bomber. The Stuka has strong burst damage and rockets, making it excellent for surprise attacks on both players and ground targets. Its dive mechanics reward aggressive play.

TIER 2 P-38 Lightning

A twin-engine American fighter with exceptional speed. The Lightning is the fastest aircraft in the game, perfect for players who prefer speed and positioning over raw firepower.

TIER 2 Zero

The nimble Japanese fighter that dominated the Pacific theater. The Zero combines high speed with excellent agility, but has lower armor than Western counterparts — rewarding skilled pilots who avoid damage.

Combat Tips

Map Objectives

The map contains several destructible objectives that grant bonus XP and useful rewards:

Skins & Customization

Each Tier 1 and Tier 2 aircraft has unlockable skins that change its visual appearance. Access the skins panel from the SKINS button on the main menu. Default skins are free, while special liveries (like the Shark Mouth P-51 or Memphis Belle B-17) can be unlocked by watching a short rewarded ad. Skins are cosmetic only and do not affect gameplay stats.

Attribute Upgrades

After reaching Tier 2, you continue earning XP. Each level-up presents a choice of attribute upgrades: Armor (damage reduction), Attack Damage (minigun damage), Max HP (total health), or Rocket Damage (explosive power). Choose upgrades that complement your aircraft and playstyle.

Minimap

The minimap in the bottom-right corner shows the entire game world. Your plane appears as a gold icon with a direction indicator. Other players are colored by tier: gray for Tier 0, blue for Tier 1, red for Tier 2. The current Ace Pilot has a pulsing gold ring. Airbases, ground targets, supply drops, and danger zones are all marked on the minimap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I evolve faster?

The fastest XP per minute comes from a balanced loop: destroy ground targets between fights, attack airbases when you have a Tier 1 or higher plane, and pick off wounded players for the kill bounty. Avoid greedy plays that get you killed — every death sends you back to the Biplane, which is a much bigger XP loss than any single objective is worth. See the full breakdown in the strategy guide.

What is the best aircraft for beginners?

The Fighter at Tier 1 and the P-51 Mustang at Tier 2. Both have balanced, forgiving stats and no extreme weaknesses. The Mustang in particular has the highest gun damage in the game, which means even imprecise aim translates into serious damage output.

Why can't I damage the airbase?

You almost certainly can — airbases have 120 HP. The problem is usually that the airbase's auto-turret is killing you faster than you can hurt it. The turret fires every 1.5 seconds for 8 damage and has a 500-pixel range. A Biplane (110 HP) cannot survive long enough inside that range to destroy the airbase. Wait until you are at least Tier 1 with rockets, then attack from outside turret range with rockets and break off before the turret kills you. See the map objectives reference for more.

How do I become the Ace Pilot?

Earn 3 kills in a row without dying. Once you reach Ace status you get a 10% speed buff, a 10% damage buff, and double XP for every kill while the streak is active. You also become visible to all players on the minimap with a pulsing gold ring, which makes you a target. The streak ends when you die.

What happens at Tier 2? Is there a Tier 3?

There is no Tier 3. After reaching a Tier 2 aircraft you continue earning XP, and every 1,500 XP you are offered a choice of attribute upgrade: Armor, Attack Damage, Max HP, or Rocket Damage. You can stack each upgrade up to five times, which means a maxed-out Tier 2 plane is significantly stronger than a fresh one.

How do skins work? Can I pay for them?

Skyraid.io does not sell anything. Skins are unlocked by watching a short rewarded ad, and they are purely cosmetic — they change the appearance of your plane but do not affect any gameplay stats. You can change your equipped skin at any time from the SKINS button on the main menu.

What's the difference between rockets and bullets?

Bullets fire from your nose in a straight line at high rate of fire and inflict damage on a single target. Rockets fire toward your mouse cursor (not your nose direction) at a slower rate, deal much higher damage per shot, and have splash damage in a 60-pixel radius. Rockets are best for finishing wounded enemies, hitting clustered targets, and destroying ground objectives.

Why do my shots sometimes miss when I'm aimed right at the enemy?

Two reasons. First, the minigun has recoil spread — the longer you hold the trigger, the wider your shots scatter. Fire in short bursts (1–1.5 seconds) for tight grouping. Second, other players are interpolated 100 ms behind real-time, so you need to lead your shots based on their movement direction, not their displayed position.

What is the rear gunner on the B-17?

The B-17 Fortress has an automatic rear-facing gun that fires at any enemy chasing you from behind. You do not need to aim it — it fires on its own as long as an enemy is in range behind your plane. It is the only Tier 2 special ability that provides defensive coverage rather than offensive utility.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Click the WITH FRIENDS button on the main menu, enter a room code (or generate one and share it), and you and your friends will spawn into the same private room. Anyone who enters the same room code joins your match.

Does the game work on mobile?

Skyraid.io runs in any modern browser, including mobile browsers. However, the controls are designed for keyboard and mouse and the experience on touch screens is limited. Desktop play is strongly recommended.

Why did I get kicked from the server?

The server runs anti-cheat checks on every input. Sending too many actions in a short period (typically because of a script or modified client) flags you with violations, and ten violations result in an automatic kick. Normal players never trigger this.
