The North American P-51 Mustang is the iconic American long-range fighter of the Second World War, and in Skyraid.io it carries that legacy as the highest single-shot gun damage of any aircraft in the game. With 15 damage per round, three rockets, and a 15-round magazine, the Mustang is built to win duels through pure firepower.
The Mustang began life in 1940 as a hasty British order to North American Aviation, who had never built a fighter before. The first prototype flew just 117 days after the contract was signed. The original Allison-engined version was disappointing at altitude, but when Rolls-Royce engineers re-engined it with the Merlin in 1942 the result was one of the finest fighters of the war: a long-range escort that could fly from England to Berlin and back, dogfight on equal terms with the Bf 109 and Fw 190 along the way, and still have fuel to engage German interceptors over the target. By 1944 Mustangs were credited with breaking the back of the Luftwaffe over Europe. Pilots loved them for the harmony of their controls, the reliability of their engines, and the sheer reach of their fuel tanks.

The Mustang is the best pure damage dealer in the game. With 15 gun damage per shot at a 180 ms fire rate, your DPS is unmatched — a single full magazine deals 225 damage before reload, which is enough to destroy any Tier 1 plane in one continuous burst and to put a serious dent in most Tier 2 opponents. Aim is more important on the Mustang than on any other plane, because every missed shot is more wasted damage than other aircraft can afford.
Use your three rockets aggressively. Eighty damage each is enough to one-shot a Biplane, finish a wounded Fighter, or stack with gunfire to instantly kill a Tier 2 you have already softened up. The seven-second rocket reload is fast enough that you should rarely sit on a full rack — if a target is in range and you have shots, fire them.
The Mustang's weakness is its turn rate. The Spitfire, Zero, and even the Lightning will out-turn you in a sustained dogfight. Avoid getting baited into circle-fights and instead force linear engagements: head-on passes, dive attacks, and disengagement boost-runs. Your speed advantage over the Bombers and Biplanes lets you control every fight against them — against another Tier 2, win the merge and break off rather than committing to a long fight.
Once you reach Tier 2 the Mustang gains an attribute upgrade choice every 1,500 XP. The strongest first picks are Attack Damage (which compounds with the Mustang's already-high gun damage to make every burst hit harder) and Max HP (to give you the survivability your turn rate cannot). Save Armor for later picks and only take Rocket Damage if you find yourself relying on rockets as a finisher.
The Mustang beats: any Tier 0 or Tier 1 plane with ease, and any Tier 2 in a head-on engagement. The Mustang struggles against: Spitfires and Zeros in sustained turning fights, and B-17 Fortresses with full HP since their rear gunner negates your boom-and-zoom approach.
